Our History

Mt. Calvary began holding services in 1928.  For most of our congregation's history we have been located on 16th Street in La Crosse, worshiping in our current building since 1961.  Our school has been in operation since 1958.  Mt. Calvary has been greatly blessed by the Lord in many different ways.  As we look to the future, we look to Him who controls the future and has promised to bless His church.

Our Beliefs & Teachings

We believe that the Bible is the revelation of God to mankind, written by men who were directly inspired by the Holy Spirit what to write.  It is true in all that it says and contains no errors or contradictions.

We believe that the Bible is the basis for all teaching and living.  From it we learn of God's marvelous creation of all that exists.  We also learn that God is holy and demands perfection.  The Bible clearly states that we humans are sinful and imperfect, and therefore have no hope of being able to live in God's presence on our own.

We believe that the Bible also brings us the good news that God loves us.  He doesn't overlook our sin, but instead, sent his own Son, Jesus Christ, to take it away from us.  By living a perfect life and then allowing himself to be killed in our place, Jesus has won salvation for all mankind.

We believe that God the Holy Spirit uses the Gospel--the Word of God and the Sacraments, Baptism and Lord's Supper, to create and strengthen faith in the heart of an individual.  That faith is what receives all of the benefits of Jesus' work and makes them the personal possession of the individual.  The result is that in Christ Jesus a person lives a life free from the accusions of Satan, the guilt of sin and the fear of death.

Our Members

Different organizations provide opportunities for people to use their God-given talents for His people.  Examples are:

  • Sunday School and Pioneers help our young members learn more about God's love for them and about using their God-given talents in ways that are both fun and practical.
  • Choir offers the chance to praise the Lord with vocal and/or instrumental talents.
  • Ladies Aid is a vital service organization within the congregation.
  • Other groups enhance worship, promote fellowship and keep in contact with our homebound or distant members.

Along with Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, we operate Mt. Mt Calvary is part of an association of congregations that operates Luther High School (www.lutherhigh.org) in Onalaska where a number of our members receive a Christ-centered high school education that prepares them for future schooling and the workforce.  Luther High is able to offer its students many opportunities to learn and use their abilities both in the classroom and in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities.
